The XBR5 series represents the
pinnacle of Sony LCD TV performance and design.
Before you even switch it on, the TV's ultra-cool
look makes a dramatic statement — the
piano-black cabinet looks as if it's suspended
in Sony's unique "floating glass"
case. The 52" KDL-52XBR5 boasts full 1080p
resolution, plus exciting innovations that will
make the XBR5s the HDTVs of choice for videophiles.
Motionflow
provides clearer 1080p pictures two ways
Sony's Motionflow anti-blur technology provides
a 120Hz refresh rate — twice that of standard
LCD TVs. You'll see strikingly smooth, smear-free
motion when viewing movies or fast action sports.
The other benefit of 120Hz comes into play when
you connect a Blu-ray high-definition disc player
with 24p output. 24 divides evenly into 120,
so no video rate conversion is necessary. You'll
see movies at their original frame rate for
the purest possible video.

10-bit LCD panel and video processing for more
accurate colors
Two key factors determining LCD picture quality
are the LCD panel and the video processing circuitry.
The KDL-52XBR5 is part of the first wave of
HDTVs to employ an LCD screen with 10-bit resolution.
A 10-bit panel can display 1024 levels of color
gradation compared to only 256 steps for conventional
8-bit panels. And 10-bit video processing fully
utilizes the panel's exceptional color resolution
to show even the subtlest shadings.
A
wider range of colors, too
In an LCD television, the backlight determines
the range of colors the TV can reproduce. A
wider color range means that more vivid colors
can be displayed. The KDL-52XBR5's "wide
color gamut" backlight produces a specific
spectrum of light optimized for Sony's special
color filters. The system reproduces more of
the full broadcast TV color range — 25%
more than standard backlights.
Future-ready
inputs for HD sources, 1080p upconversion for
non-HD sources
The KDL-52XBR5's set of audio/video jacks is
heavy on HD-compatible connections, including
two component video and three digital HDMI inputs,
all with the ability to accept 1080p video.
High-def material is expanding rapidly, and
you may already have an HD satellite receiver,
video game console, camcorder, and more.
But
realistically, you'll probably still be watching
some regular (analog) programs for a while yet.
That's when you'll really appreciate the KDL-52XBR5's
advanced video processing. BRAVIA Engine Pro
with Digital Reality Creation upconverts all
interlaced and progressive video signals —
including HD signals — directly to 1080p
for stunning detail.
